Abstract:

The pollen morphology of subfamily Chrysophylloideae (Sapotaceae) in Thailand was investigated to determine its taxonomic significance. Pollen of 11 samples representing eightspecies was examined using light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Pollen grains were found to be monads, isopolar, colporate, small- to large-sized, variable shape and exine ornamentation, lalongate and elliptic endoaperture. Five pollen types were recognised: Chrysophyllum type, Pouteria I type, Pouteria II type, Synsepalum type and Xantolis type. The pollen provides characters that are taxonomically useful in the classification of the Thai Chrysophylloideae. Pouteria grandifolia, P. obovata and P.stellibacca are transferred to the genus Planchonella as their pollen grains are distinct from Pouteria campechiana.
